I used to make a list each year of stuff I did during the year (see year links up top as I type), but I've stopped the practice as I'm not really "producing" enough to make a regular list worthwhile. Instead I'm going to do a more blog post style wrapup to chat about mostly what I've been doing, playing, reading etc.
Firstly in terms of Stuff I Made, a longer post about this is already on itchio as a retrospective on Videotome Heartbreak, my fourth entry in the Videotome series of game engines. A lot of my thoughts are already there and I don't feel like repeating, so I will briefly summarise here.
Three games and an engine isn't bad for a year I was still working full time on another AAA game.... I'm happy with my output and haven't felt the need to push myself more to crunch on hobby stuff this year, which I count as an improvement. Not to say I didn't try more - two games fell by the wayside, an entry for Menhera Jam and an attempt at a sequel to Victim Doll made for IFComp. The latter I'm still working on, but it will probably be for next (this, 2025) year instead...
What else happened this year? Well, a bunch of my friends and coworkers were laid off from my job as part of the ongoing games industry economic collapse. Many of them have struggled to find jobs afterwards, which doesn't feel great. I'm clinging on in an increasingly stressful environment and trying to do some contingency planning for what happens afterwards.
I moved in with my two girlfriends to a different flat, which is a bit smaller and cosy. I had a tiny holiday trip to the New Forest, did a bunch of walks around the year, started using my proper camera again more.
I started learning Japanese around September ish, which is the first time I've tried to learn a second language since I was in school. I'm enjoying the process of learning to read a totally different alphabet and finding it fun, if slow going. I read my first "book" this holiday season, being a child's book for like 3 year olds or something. It's a little humbling but I'm proud still of making gradual progress.
Other than that, I have played and watched an ungodly amount of things this year. Actually putting them all to paper makes me feel slightly bad about it lol. I was gonna jot them all down here but it's too much work lol.
Instead... have a good year everyone!
